Don’t Change the Name
Monday, March 26th, 2007Daily Blog Tips is asking bloggers to post on the biggest blog mistakes they’ve made. So I’m going to play along. I’ll post the complete list of mistakes submitted when it’s final. So here’s goes.
Don’t Change Blog Name or URL
I started my blog under the name/URL, themarketing411.wordpress.com. Then 6 months later I changed the blog name and the domain (to ViralVoice.net). All of the links gone. Visitors dropped off and it took several months to rebuild. Next time, I would wait until I had the strategy, name, etc. firmly in place, then start the blog.

I know, I did the same mistake. Yet, I managed to keep some readers by writing on every post from the old URL that we moved, and they can read the post at … and I gave the link to the new location. It took me several hours to do that, but even today, after 8 months, I still get visits referred from the old location.
This is some valuable advice. If you start a brand, you grow it and not kill it. Thanks for a good post.

While I agree it is best not to change the URL, I’m not so sure I agree about not changing the name.
As I indicated in a recent post http://mikeschaffner.typepad.com/michael_schaffner/2007/03/its_not_what_yo.html when I changed the name from “Management of Information Technology for Strategic Alignment with the Business” (very forgettable and uninspiring) to “Beyond Blinking Lights and Acronyms” I received a lot of favorable comments on the name change. I’ve also noted that people will actually google the new name to get the link, something that never happened with the old one.
I agree it is best to have your strategy (and name) set and then start your blog but it the names needs an upgrade I’d recommend doing as long as you don’t change the URL
Mike
Good point Mike. I do think its best (easiest to remember) if the name and url are the same. But if you have to make a name change, keeping the URL the same if at all possible would be the best way to go. I went from Wordpress.com to self-hosted Wordpress which forced the URL change.

omg, I do agree about your entry not to change the blog name. Maybe just to check the spelling right at the beginning would be better lol for my blog.

[…] I might make a change! I might turn this name into that! Like changing horses in mid-race, I wanna turn this dog into a cat. Why didn’t I spend more time on my domain name, maybe now I’d be satisfied. I ain’t pleased with what I chose and now the whole darn thing feels mighty flat. (Denise) […]
